Flabbergasted by the Fleet Don Ruma... Page Spring is finally here! It won’t be long and we’ll be back on the water for the 2008 boating season. It’s also time to get the club ready for a summer of fun. Spring Clean-Up is planned for Saturday, April 12TH, with a rain-day scheduled for the 26TH. We’ve prepared a long list of things to do inside and out, and we need your help! Several folks have already volunteered their tools and services, but many hands will make for quick work. Coffee and donuts will be provided for volunteers in the morning and pizza and beer will be available when we’re done. So come down to help, and show your pride in the club by participating.
The details for the June rendezvous at Algonac Harbor Club have been set. See the flyer for the Mardi Gras Shakedown Cruise in this month’s Siren. Remember to sign-up and pay by June 1ST for a $5.00 per person saving. In addition to providing information on the form, each boat captain will need to contact Algonac Harbor Club to reserve a well.
The plans for the Harbor Hill and Sarnia Bay rendezvous are coming together; more information will be provided in next month’s Siren. It was decided at the last board meeting that the Festival of Lights party would be open to recruit new members, but, we are still looking for a boat to enter into the parade. Please contact me if you would like to volunteer.
That’s it for now. See you around the Club!
Mount Clemens Power Squadron Educational Department
Dates: Thursdays, May 22, 2008—June 12, 2008, 6:45– 8:45 p.m. Location: Mariners Boat Club 31970 North River Rd., Harrison Twp.., MI 48045
Education Officer: Lt/C Duane Carlson—wpfly@juno.com
So far the club has successfully participated in the Detroit Boat Show and the Mac Ray open house with a booth and hand outs. As a result, we’ve signed a few new members and have experienced optimistic people. We have over 100 e-mails from people to invite to our open houses that are scheduled for April 27th and May 11th. Your participation in helping to recruit new members would be appreciated.
Our newest program is “High School Handout”. We are recruiting kids from a nearby high school athletic team to hand out invitations to the open houses in local neighborhoods. This will take place on the same day as the club clean up (April 12th). We will provide them with pizza and pop for helping us out. Your participation in this event would also be greatly appreciated.
Another important initiative following new member enlistment is new member retention. The New Member Retention Program is one that will make us aware of new members by asking them to wear an identifying symbol on their lapel or collar. As a veteran Mariner you are asked to introduce yourself and find some type of commonality with them just as you would like to be treated if you were a stranger in a new club. It’s that simple, and that straight forward. Other clubs require members to work “duty hours” which, in a way, is a very useful way to acclimate new people to the club by having them interact with the existing membership. This should become a standing activity for Mariner’s. Please encourage the new members to participate in rendezvous, tiki parties and other club functions. Demonstrate to them that Mariners truly is … the Friendliest Club on Lake St. Clair!
| THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! The Turning Point Fundraiser was another huge success. $554.00 was collected from monetary donations along with many box-loads of donated items. The end result was once again about 90 filled Easter Baskets, toiletry baskets and buckets filled with cleaning supplies. The Buoys Belles worked very hard to reach this goal with fewer participants than we had last year. However, there were others’ who stepped up to the plate to help us reach our goal. Lucido’s Insurance Agency donated $120.00 along with MANY donated supplies. Lisa Zerelli collected over $100 on a Friday night to help the cause. And even our young/future Mariner’s, Sydney Buzzelli and Mike Napior Jr. raised $31.25 one evening by telling jokes for donations. Everything was delivered on March 21 and Kim Johnson, the Facilities Director was on hand to gratefully accept Mariner’s generosity. She sent a heartfelt thank you to everyone and said there was a need for everything we donated. Again, thank you to everyone who helped make this happen. Special thanks go to the Buoy’s Belles, who are always working hard for the Club behind the scenes and to Wayne Polachowski for his assistance in shopping/lifting and hauling. We did it again! Sincerely, Karen Rae Page |

No business plan has ever been put in place. Dennis made a motion to have Captain Joe head the committee for next door. Commodore John Leslie stated that only the Commodore can appoint chairpeople. Don Seed stated that there are some conditions about next door when it was purchased that we need to resolve first. Officers Reports: Secretary: Linda Gerstenberger-deferred to Harvey because he was doing the minutes. Minutes given from July 15, Sept. 30, Nov. 4 (election), and Dec 13 (no quorum). Motion made by Don Patrosso to approve the minutes. Seconded by Don Ruma. Motion passes. 1 Nay. Treasurer: Jacqui Nickol-Basically we are doing well, but we are still in trouble. We need more membership and parties. It would help if people would pay their second half of dues as soon as possible. Taxes cannot be filed by March 15. We will file for an extension with no penalty. Our membership dues for Jan. & Feb. is $25,000. Jim Krause asked why we don't have report given to membership. The Commmodore stated that we have a financial report coming up under new business. Harvey pointed out that we are saving $4000 a year by having Nichol & Associates help with our financial situation. Fleet Captain: Don Ruma - Rendezvous are set for : Algonac Harbor- June 20-22, Harbor Hill - July 18-20, Sarnia Bay - Aug. 1517, and St. Clair - Sept. 19-21. We want to encourage boaters to stop here that day and enjoy an "Afterglow." We would like someone to donate their boat to be decorated by Mariner's for Festival of Lights. Rear Commodore: Harvey Karpinski - Rentals for upstairs & downstairs have brought in $375, Super Bowl-$700, ABYA dinner about $300, Past Commodores Party & Valentine's Party needed more participants. Question was asked if renting out our kitchen has been helpful to the club. Yes, it has. Questions about bringing in food were addressed. Club members can cook for all "Club " functions. Private parties have to go through the caterers. Vice Commodore: Jack Lobaido Bar is up over $9000 from last Jan. & Feb. We're having parties about every other weekend. We need more attendance. We are keeping bar prices the same even though there is a 7% increase. We will ride it out. Liquor is now being ordered on line. We are taking inventory on everything behind the bar. Commodore's Ball is Fri. May 2 at the Mirage at 7:00 pm. Afterglow will be at Mariner's on Sat. night. Mariner's will reopen on Monday nights beginning April 7. A question was raised by Barbara Hanley as to where the $100 from the reverse raffle tickets went. John Leslie replied that he donated the money for the Commodore's Ball to the club. He was going to cancel the Commodore's Ball, but we have found a way to have it without costing the club anything. Question asked by Maureen Mullin as to whether we are having a going away party for Jackie, our previous bartender, or are we hiring her back. John Leslie responded that we are not bringing her back. It is not financially feasible to pay her more money than what we are paying our current bartenders. She wanted $10 an hour. She has left us with no notice. Jacqui Nichol stated that we have fewer problems now with the team we have now. John L. said that when Jackie gave her 1 day notice we allowed her to be on the floor. That was her party. Mark Malaspina suggested that a private party could be given for her. Commodore: John Leslie-Numerous problems with former webmaster, Jeff Hayman. Jason Mateyak is trying to get our website back up. We are trying to get anonymous e-mails stopped. It's causing problems with the club. Question brought up that there are members who are getting dues paid for. Who are they? John said that Bill Calihan does furnace work and Tony Buzzelli does the plumbing. This is good for the club. These are licensed people that are working for dues for this year only. Work is for this building only.

New Business:
Barb Hanley said that Euchre will start on Sundays at a 2:00 or 2:30 start. Food will be brought in. Starting on March 30. Maureen asked if people who quit the club are allowed to come into the club. John Leslie said Yes they are. Jim Krause questioned number of memberships and amount of money from memberships. It was clarified that some members have paid 1/2 dues and some also paid in Dec. Financial Health of our club-Mark Malaspina - We are ahead. Ended last year with $11,700 up. In 2008 Budget we are currently at $24,800. We are $15,000 to the good. Expenses are monitored by the Flag & Board andhas to have an accountability. Because Jan. is a slow time of year we were expected to lose more but we picked up $5,400 in cutting expenses. Our biggest loss is in membership. Revenues are up over $16,000. Financial reporting and accuracy have greatly improved. It was asked why we can't have everything on paper. John and Mark said that we don't want all of this in publication because we don't want everything spread to the public about our financial situation. Copies of a financial report is available to all of those members who wish it.
Colleen and Eddie Maluchnik made a proposal for Mariner's to take personal money to pay off our loan. Money loaned to Mariner's in $25,000 increments with a 5% interest. This would save the club $2000. per month. These investors would also form a committee of 5 to talk to the Board. They would also be lien holders for the club. Standard loan agreement to protect the club and the investors. -Motion made by Dennis Hawkins and seconded by Maureen Mullin to allow Colleen & Eddie Maluchnik to proceed to investigate the proposal of taking in personal investments of a suggested $25,000 at a 5% interest rate in order to help pay off Mariner's mortgage. Motion passed. It was also suggested that we send members that we've lost letters to invite them back for $300 memberships.
